5. Topic of choise: Modern decoration in the Alstahaug
church
Laura Priščáková
There is
„Den bibelske syklus“ – paintings with biblical motives in the Alstahaug
church. It was surprising to see such a modern decoration in the old church.
Author of these oil paintings on wood panels is Håkon Gullvåg. He is well-known
Norwegian artist from Trodhaim. He work with religious motives as well as he
focuses on portraits, decoration and book-project. He is one of the foremost
authors of ecclesiastical commissions in Norway moreover we can see his work
for example in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land.[1]
Old church with modern art
There are
several pieces of paintings of biblical cycles in the Alstahaug church. Four of
them were the most interesting for me; paintings of Genesis, Tower of Babel, Crucifixion
of Jesus Christ and Last Supper. It was interesting to compare this Last Supper
and famous Last Supper from Leonardo Da Vinci and the others from different old
paintings in the churches. Colours and arrangements of Gullvåg’s work are similar to old paintings. I
think that figures on the Gullvåg’s paintings are the most different.

Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci [2]
In
conclusion I would like to focus on an atmosphere of the churches that we
visited. It is related with the modern art from Håkon Gullvåg in the Alstahaug
church. I always felt well in these churches because the atmosphere was
relaxed. We had our lesson near the altar! I have visited many churches but
they were mostly Catholic. We have old churches in the Czech Republic even
older but they are Catholic and I feel always that I have to be quiet. There
are old paintings and the atmosphere is conservative. It was new experience for
me that the churches could be so open; open to the public (it is normal to have
space for children in the church) or open to new art.
