1. Museums in Nordland

Hannah Fulton

During our trips as part of the Adventure Knowledge course, we were able to visit several museums in the area focusing on different periods and figures in Norwegian history. They offered an interesting look into what life was like in different periods and gave a thought-provoking survey of different happenings in Norwegian history.

It is interesting to me to contrast the different styles of museums that we visited. Museums like Herøy and the lower level of Nordlandsmuseet offered artifacts displayed in their original setting with little explanation as to the history of the artifacts. I think these museum types are particularly effective at immersing the visitors into the culture and letting them experience history by sort of stepping back in time. Although the purpose of certain artifacts might be confusing, with the help of an informed guide to explain items’ significances, these types of museums really  bring history back from the past.

In contrast, the Vefsn, Petter Dass, and upper level of Nordlandsmuseet utilized a different method of displaying artifacts. These museums offered rich descriptions and stories to accompany the items. I think that, in the study of specific events or people it is helpful to read about what happened for a richer understanding. In the case of poet Petter Dass, learning about his preaching and influence through poetry was a great addition to the artifacts in the museum. Additionally, the Vefsn Museum and the exhibit on Bodø’s history in Nordlandsmuseet both which helped me understand exactly how the towns of Mosjøen and Bodø came to be what they are today.

I think that the contrasts between these museums really shows that museums can be very varied and still be effective to visitors.
